Il a obtenu son doctorat au MIT en 1977, puis a enseigné à l'université de Yale, au MIT, à Berkeley, à la London School of Economics et à l'université de Stanford. Il est l’auteur de plus de 200 articles de recherche (&lt;em&gt;American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Quarterly Journal of Economics&lt;/em&gt;…). Il est l’un des fondateurs des « nouvelles théories du commerce international » et a grandement contribué au renouveau de la théorie des crises de change. Ces travaux lui ont valu en 1991 la prestigieuse médaille John Bates Clark, un prix remis tous les deux ans par l’Association américaine d’économie au meilleur économiste de moins de quarante ans. Il est chercheur associé au &lt;em&gt;National Bureau of Economic Research &lt;/em&gt;et au &lt;em&gt;Centre for Economic Policy Research&lt;/em&gt;. Il a par ailleurs travaillé à la Maison-Blanche de 1982 à 1983, où il faisait partie du &lt;em&gt;Council of Economic Advisers&lt;/em&gt;, le comité des conseillers économiques. Paul Krugman est non seulement un économiste inﬂuent dans le milieu académique, mais il s’est aussi fait connaître du grand public en tant qu’éditorialiste pour les magazines &lt;em&gt;Fortune, Foreign Policy, The Economist &lt;/em&gt;et surtout &lt;em&gt;The New York Times&lt;/em&gt;.
